To compare the characteristics of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans) between Republic of Korea and Japan, A. actinomycetemcomitans was isolated and characterized by the fermentation of carbohydrates, serotype, leukotoxicities, SDS-PAGE, and Western blotting. Biotyping on the basis of the fermentation of xylose, mannitol, and galactose resulted in three distinct biotypes.
There are some homologies and heterogeneities of biotypes between Repulic of Korea and Japan. SDS-PAGE and Western blotting patterns of total protein were evaluated for eight strains belonging to the three serotypes. The patterns were similar for all strains except one Japanese isolate investigated. A. actinomycetemcomitans from Japanese patient with localized juvenile periodontitis showed a strong band. All A. actinomycetemcomitans showed the leukotoxicity at 60 min and 90 min. The antibody levels to the serotype a and b of A. actinomycetemcomitans in the Japanese patients with periodontitis were higher than that of serotype c. The antibody levels to A.
actinomycetemcomitans were similar among 3 serotypes in Korea.
These results suggest that some homologies and heterogeneities of AA actinomycetemcomitans between Republic of Korea and Japan might be existed.
